Lymphedema and MLD

Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a gentle skin massage technique that promotes improved lymphatic circulation and draining of accumulated lymph fluid from areas of congestion to areas that are draining properly.

Indications for MLD

  • Lymphedema

  • Post operative edema

  • Post traumatic edema

  • Chronic venous insufficiency

  • Palliative Care

What is Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is the abnormal accumulation of protein rich lymphatic fluid caused by congenital abnormalities, surgical removal of lymph nodes, radiation of lymph nodes, or disease/trauma to lymphatic vessels or nodes. Lymphedema is a chronic condition that can be controlled with skilled therapeutic intervention followed by daily self-care.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)
A comprehensive treatment for Lymphedema which includes

  • Skin care

  • MLD

  • Compression bandaging

  • Therapeutic exercise

  • Fitting of compression garments

  • Client/family education
